Introduction
For most Indian WooCommerce stores, the practical choice is between Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree, PhonePe and Paytm, because each of them publishes its own official plugin on WordPress.org. WooCommerce's own WooPayments is not an option for a business registered in India, as India is not on the WooPayments supported countries list. So the decision comes down to which payment methods you need, how refunds and settlements work for your type of orders, and whether the plugin fits your server.
This guide compares those official plugins, plus CCAvenue, on the things that matter once a store is live. It does not list fees. Every gateway changes its pricing and negotiates with larger merchants, so we link each official pricing page instead and suggest you compare quotes for your own order volume.
Why WooPayments is not on the list for Indian stores
WooPayments is WooCommerce's built-in gateway, and in many countries it is the default suggestion during setup. WooCommerce's documentation says the relevant country is the one where your business is registered, not where you live, and India is not among the supported countries. An Indian business therefore needs a third-party gateway plugin.
The good news is that the main Indian gateways maintain their own WooCommerce plugins, so you are not relying on an unknown developer for the code that handles your money.
WooCommerce payment gateways in India at a glance
The table below uses only what each official plugin page on WordPress.org states, checked in October 2026. Pricing is linked, not quoted.
| Gateway | Official plugin | What the plugin page highlights | Pricing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Razorpay | Razorpay for WooCommerce | Cards, net banking, UPI, wallets, EMI and pay later; international cards; refunds | Razorpay pricing |
| PayU | PayU India | Official PayU India plugin with regular security and refund fixes in its changelog | PayU pricing |
| Cashfree | Cashfree for WooCommerce | Instant refunds for online and COD orders, card pre-authorisation, instant settlements | Cashfree charges |
| PhonePe | PhonePe Payment Solutions | PhonePe option at checkout; separate test and live credentials | PhonePe PG pricing |
| Paytm | Paytm Payment Gateway | Cards, net banking from 50+ banks, UPI, wallets and buy now, pay later; refunds from the dashboard | Paytm pricing |
| CCAvenue | No CCAvenue-published plugin found on WordPress.org | Third-party plugins exist; check who maintains them | Via CCAvenue |
Razorpay: the broadest list of payment methods
The Razorpay plugin page describes it as the official Razorpay gateway for WooCommerce and lists domestic and international credit and debit cards, EMIs, pay later, net banking, UPI and several mobile wallets. It also supports refunds from inside WooCommerce and mentions customers paying in their local currency, which matters if you sell abroad as well as in India.
Razorpay is a sensible default when you want one plugin to cover almost every way an Indian customer might pay. The plugin page also lists Malaysian payment methods, which is only useful if you have a Malaysian business.
PayU: established, but keep the plugin updated
The PayU India plugin is published by PayU India. Its description on WordPress.org is short, so most of what you learn comes from the changelog. That changelog is worth reading: version 3.9.0 fixed a reported order price change vulnerability, and version 3.8.9 fixed a reflected XSS vulnerability.
That is not a reason to avoid PayU. Fixes like these are a sign the plugin is maintained. It is a reason to turn on updates and test them on a staging copy, which we cover in our website security checklist. A payment plugin that is two versions behind is one of the riskiest things you can leave on a store.
Cashfree: strong if you ship cash on delivery
The Cashfree plugin page says it accepts more than 100 domestic and international payment modes and lists instant refunds for both online and COD orders, pre-authorisation for card payments and instant settlements.
The COD refund point is the one Indian sellers should notice. Refunding a cash on delivery order usually means collecting bank or UPI details from the customer by hand. If a large share of your orders are COD and returns are common, as with clothing and footwear, a gateway that handles those refunds from the same dashboard saves real admin time.

PhonePe: check your PHP version first
The PhonePe Payment Solutions plugin adds a PhonePe option to the WooCommerce checkout. PhonePe issues a Merchant ID, Client ID and Client Secret for both test and live modes, and the plugin page notes that no money is deducted in test mode, so you can run full test orders before going live.
The detail that catches people out is the server requirement. The current version needs PHP 8.2 or higher, and the plugin page points sites on older PHP to version 2.0.11 instead. Our advice is to upgrade PHP rather than pin an old payment plugin, but check that your theme and other plugins work on PHP 8.2 first.
Paytm: familiar to customers, needs a business account
The official Paytm plugin lists credit and debit cards, net banking from more than 50 banks, UPI, wallets and buy now, pay later options, with refunds started from the Paytm for Business dashboard. Before you enable it, you need a Paytm for Business account. Its listed requirements are PHP 7.4 or higher and the PHP cURL extension.
The plugin page also makes a number of marketing claims about scale and success rates. Treat those as the vendor's claims and judge Paytm, like the others, on a real test checkout with your own bank and UPI apps.
CCAvenue: confirm who maintains the plugin
CCAvenue is a long-standing Indian gateway, but when we searched the WordPress.org directory in October 2026, the CCAvenue plugins listed came from third-party developers, for example CCAvenue Gateway Integration for WooCommerce by TechBella, rather than from CCAvenue itself. Ask CCAvenue which integration kit it supports for WooCommerce before you choose, and make sure someone is responsible for updating it.
How do you choose the right WooCommerce payment gateway?
- List the payment methods your customers use. UPI and cards are expected. EMI, pay later and wallets matter more for higher-value baskets.
- Count your COD orders and returns. If both are high, refund handling for COD orders should weigh heavily.
- Check your server. Compare your PHP version with each plugin's stated requirement before you install anything.
- Compare pricing for your own volume. Open each pricing page linked above and ask for a quote if your monthly sales are large.
- Run a real test order. Use test credentials first, then one small live order and one refund, before you announce anything.
Keep the checkout fast as well. Payment scripts add weight to the checkout page, and our WooCommerce speed optimisation guide shows what to look at.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use WooPayments in India?
Not for a business registered in India. WooCommerce says the country that counts is where the business is registered, and India is not on its supported list. Indian stores use an Indian gateway's plugin instead.
Which WooCommerce payment gateway is best for UPI?
The Razorpay and Paytm plugin pages list UPI explicitly. For PayU, Cashfree and PhonePe, confirm the UPI options with the gateway during onboarding. Then test the UPI flow on a phone with the apps your customers actually use, because that is where most checkout problems show up.
How often should I update the payment plugin?
Whenever the gateway releases an update, after a quick test on a staging copy. The PayU India changelog, for example, includes fixes for a reported order price change vulnerability and a reflected XSS vulnerability, which is exactly why payment plugins should not be left behind.
Why don't you list the fees?
Gateway pricing changes, differs by payment method and is often negotiated for larger merchants. A figure in a blog post goes out of date quickly, so we link each official pricing page so you always see the current rates.
Should I choose WooCommerce or Shopify for an Indian store?
That depends on more than payments. We compare the two from our own builds in WooCommerce or Shopify? We've built both.
Conclusion
If you want the widest set of payment methods from one plugin, start with Razorpay. If cash on delivery refunds take up your team's time, look closely at Cashfree. PayU, Paytm and PhonePe are all solid official options, provided you keep the plugin updated and your server meets its requirements, and CCAvenue needs a check on who maintains the integration.
