Introduction
If your Shopify products are not showing on Google, the cause is usually one of three things: the products never reached Google Merchant Center, Merchant Center has flagged them, or Google can't crawl and understand the product pages themselves. Work through those three in order and you will find the problem in most stores without touching the theme code.
This guide covers both places products appear: the Shopping tab and other free listings, which come from Merchant Center, and normal search results for your product pages, which depend on crawling and product markup. It won't promise rankings, because nobody can, but it will make sure Google is able to show your products at all.
Is it Google Shopping or normal search that's missing your products?
Start by being clear about which result you expect. Google says free listings can show products on Search, Images, Lens, YouTube, Gemini, Maps and the Shopping tab, and that they help product pages appear, not homepages, policy pages or category pages (Google Merchant Center Help: free listings). Those listings are fed by Merchant Center. A plain blue link to your product page is different: it comes from Google crawling and indexing the page.
If your whole store is missing from Google, not just products, read our guide on why a website is not showing on Google first, because the fix there is basic indexing.
| Where you want to appear | What feeds it | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Shopping tab and other free listings | Product data synced to Merchant Center | Merchant Center product and issue reports |
| Product details in normal results | Product structured data on the page | Rich Results Test |
| Plain search result for a product page | Crawling and indexing | Search Console URL Inspection |
Step 1: Is the Google & YouTube channel set up and syncing?
On Shopify, products reach Merchant Center through the Google & YouTube sales channel, which syncs your products and store information automatically. Shopify lists the store requirements for it (Shopify Help: Google & YouTube channel requirements):
- Your online store can't be in private mode, so a password page blocks it.
- A valid payment provider must be set up in the Shopify admin.
- A refund policy and terms of service must be added and linked in your footer menu.
- At least one contact method, such as email, phone, mailing address or a contact form, must be visible to customers.
- You must ship to a supported country and sell in a currency that matches it.
The channel shows a setup checklist with a link beside each missing item. If any line is still open, products may not sync, so clear that list before you look anywhere else.
Step 2: Is the Merchant Center account connected correctly?
Shopify also notes two account issues that quietly stop syncing. You can't sync products into a multi-client Merchant Center account, and your Merchant Center account needs a verified domain that isn't associated with another account. Shopify claims your domain automatically when you connect, unless a different Google account already holds it; in that case you transfer the claim to the account linked to Shopify (Shopify Help).
This happens a lot when a previous developer or agency set up Merchant Center under their own login. Find out who owns the old account before you create a new one.
Step 3: Are products disapproved or limited in Merchant Center?
Once products sync, open the products and issues reports in Merchant Center and work through what they list, starting with the issues that affect the most products. In Shopify stores the usual suspects are:
- Missing or vague product titles and descriptions.
- Missing brand or product identifiers.
- Placeholder images, collages or images covered in text.
- A price or stock status on the page that doesn't match what was synced.
Where you can, fix the product in Shopify itself, so the correction syncs through the channel instead of living only in Merchant Center.
Step 4: Are free listings on, and is shipping set up?
Google says new Merchant Center accounts are opted in to free listings by default, and you can see the status on the Free listings page. It also says that status gives permission to show products for free but doesn't guarantee they will be shown (Google Merchant Center Help).
Shipping matters too. Google requires shipping settings, or a shipping attribute in your product data, in a long list of countries that includes India, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and Canada. Google also recommends adding your return policy so return information can appear next to your products. If you sell in any of those countries and shipping isn't configured, fix that next.

Step 5: Can Google read your product pages?
For product details to appear in normal search, Google's merchant listing guidance says the product page needs Product structured data with three required properties: name, image and a nested offers Offer. Image URLs must be crawlable and indexable (Google Search Central: merchant listing structured data).
Your theme may already output this markup, but don't assume. Paste a product URL into Google's Rich Results Test and fix any critical errors. Apps that add their own markup can create duplicates or conflicts, so if the test shows two Product items, find out which app or snippet is adding the second one.
Step 6: Is the page indexable at all?
Google's same guide says to make sure the page isn't blocked by robots.txt, a noindex tag or a login, and to use the URL Inspection tool in Search Console to see how Google views it. On Shopify, check these in particular:
- The store password page is off.
- No app or theme edit has added a noindex tag to product templates.
- The product is published to the Online Store sales channel, not only to other channels.
- Your sitemap is submitted in Search Console.
If the page looks fine in URL Inspection, request a recrawl. Google notes it can take several days after publishing for a page to be found and crawled, and recommends submitting a sitemap so it keeps up with changes.
Step 7: Is the product page good enough to show?
Even when everything is technically correct, Google picks which products to show. Clear titles that name the product the way buyers search for it, real photos, accurate stock and a fast page all help. If pages load slowly, our Shopify speed optimisation guide covers fixes that don't need a rebuild. And if products are showing but not selling, see why a Shopify store gets visitors but no sales.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Google Ads for my Shopify products to show on Google?
No. Free listings let eligible products appear on Google at no cost, and Google says new Merchant Center accounts are opted in by default. Ads are a separate, paid option.
Why are my products in Merchant Center but still not on Google?
Check the issues report for disapprovals or limited eligibility, then confirm shipping settings and the free listings status. Google also says an active status doesn't guarantee a product will be shown, because it matches products to searches using your data.
How long does it take for new Shopify products to appear?
Google gives no fixed time. Its documentation says it can take several days for a new page to be found and crawled, so submit your sitemap and use URL Inspection to request a recrawl.
Can a password-protected store sync to Google?
No. Shopify's requirements say your online store can't be in private mode to use the Google & YouTube channel, and Google can't crawl pages behind a login.
Conclusion
Work from the outside in: clear the Google & YouTube channel checklist, fix the Merchant Center connection and any disapprovals, turn on free listings with shipping set up, then confirm each product page has valid markup and is indexable. Most missing-product problems sit in the first two steps. If you'd rather have a developer audit your Shopify setup or rebuild the store properly, see our Shopify development services.
